MY name is Mark Andrew Webber, i am a graphic designer from Reading, England. i am 23 years old and a graduate of the Ba (hons) Graphic Design course at University College Falmouth. Though the main basis for my works started when i was studying at TVU - Reading, in which i studied graphic design at various levels for four years. This is where i was shown printmaking techniques and did a course in it, and was taught in a very open minded way.
I had a break for one year after my first year studies to travel to australia for 5 months to do conservation work and attend an american high school for a month after, which all inspired me greatly in future works, And to travel more, which i have managed to do(i visited Argentina for a month, and india). other cultures and ways of living are a great way to start thinking in a very open minded way.
i started my "where in the world city map series", in 2006 on the last year at TVU. I am a member of the international society of Typographic Designers (ISTD) and was commissioned by them to be involved with the 2006 London Design festival, ISTD exhibition which was named, my city, my London. I was able to show my work along side some amazing people and was thrilled to be amongst the works of, Alan Fletcher, Margaret Calvert, Ken Garland, and Derek Birdsall.
The next point of my career was that same year in August, i was asked by the Arts council of England to design and lino carve the Front cover of their magazine, and use the actual lino carving inked up in various colours as the front cover of the magazine, which was then used as the November/December issue, and was distributed all over the Uk and some to america and parts of europe.
The end of 2006 was when i went to University college Falmouth to Join their second year of the degree and loved every second of it. Falmouth is based in Cornwall and is a very inspirational place, i found out about fine art from here and could see that most of the work i love to do and what interests me most is fine art illustration. in the beginning of 2008 i sent off work for the annual awards for the Art Directors Club Of New York, and was lucky enough to be awarded a silver cube for the "where in the world city map series" of which i attended the award gala in New York. I now have a few commissions on the go, and am also planning/designing my next city map Paris, a place which i had been to in November 2007 to study its typography for my university dissertation about french Typography.
My project which is titled Linocuts, traditional printmaking, is a series of experiments with some different carvings i have made, being either rubber stamp illustrations, linocut prints, lino carved animation, or the actual lino carving itself. i have found that you can get some rather interesting images, from the carvings themselves.
You can take photos of carvings and make some interesting compositions from them, which is what i have done for sub series "where in the world city maps" i took photos of different parts of the maps just before i had printed, which gave a very clean result, a very different result happens when you take photography of the carving after printing has happened, because the linoleum is dirty then.
The series is based on city maps and the more well known areas of each city, i have been developing the maps, as these first three i have done, london, new york, and amsterdam, have been only slightly different, i am working on designs of other cities that will be more colorful and larger.
many problems occur when you work in the scale i have been working for these lino cuts A1-A0. Each carving is done backwards so that the print is printed readable, so the amount of text does get confusing at times, and a few type errors have been made and later corrected. Printing such a big print can also be hard because of the availability of large scale presses. also two people are needed to help position the paper onto each print to stop smudging, you have to judge the amount of ink rolled onto the linoleum correctly, and multiple colors, means you have to position each linoleum panel just right.
I love this more traditional form of printing, and seeing what kinds of things i can do with it, i like to make a contemporary works, using traditional means. This was ultimately achieved when i started my first linoleum carved animation (linomation). it was just a tester so i did each panel quite small, but the next animation i have made from linoleum, was done at 6cm X 6cm, and around 300 of them. This process does take a long time but is very rewarding, you get not only the linocarving, but you get prints which are both artworks in their own rights, but after this when you take 300 photos of the linoleum and then 300 of the prints you get 2 more outcomes from the kind of stop frame motion you have created.
Something that pushes me forward and to work more with this medium is that it seems as though my hand are not wanting me to do this. I have arthritis in basically all of my joins but mainly my hands, and more so in my right hand, so being right handed is annoying, but the pain i get when carving at times drives me forward, im not going to stop doing this art i love, a lot of pain goes into each piece i work on but that just helps me to drive to finish it and not quit as i could easily do. I like the mentality of "you can do anything you put your mind to" and also "the bad times make the good times that much sweeter" its something that drives the work i create, and the life i lead. I hope that my work can take me to many more countries, and i hope to be able to experiment a lot more, maybe things might get worse with age, but i'm optimistic and Enjoying life at the moment. I want to meet more people through my work and hope i get to work with some great and interesting people.
